What qualifications do I need to be a Pastor?
Previous ] Contents ] Next ]

The qualifications required for the work of the Ministry are :

A personal knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour - that you have been born again, and turned in repentance and faith to Christ. It is more important to be a B.A.(Born again) than B.A.(Batchelor of Arts)

A CALL from God to the ministry, which I find helpful to summarise like this, using the word CALL :

  • Confirmation - other christians can generally see evidence that God may have gifted you and called you into the work. Often they may see this before you do.
  • Aptitude - there must be the gifts necessary for public preaching and pastoral care of others. So you must be able to correctly handle the Bible - to rightly divide the word of God.
  • Longing - Do have a longing to do the work of the Ministry ? Some men love to have the position, but do not have the longing for the hard work involved, and the personal cost of such a work.
  • Lifestyle - does your life and character match the requirements of an elder as laid down in the Bible ?
